Gynaecomastia/Male Breast Reduction

Large breasts in men are common. It is estimated that at some time in their life over a third of men experience this problem.

Gynaecomastia is an enlargement of the male breast as a result of an abnormal increase in the glandular tissue. It is quite common affecting an estimated 40 to 60 percent of men to varying degrees, for men who feel self-conscious about their appearance surgery can help.

Indications
This operation is to remove excess breast tissue in men. This develops in one of two patterns, either a firm button of tissue beneath the nipple or a diffuse fatty change with poorly defined edges.Sometimes both patterns are present.

The causes of gynecomastia are numerous and may dictate the treatment used.

What does the surgery involve?
Liposuction is used to remove the fatty tissue under a general anaesthetic. Small incisions are then made around the nipple and at other sites in the chest. A small metal tube (cannula) is used to suck out the fatty tissue. If necessary glandular tissue is also removed through incisions at the border of the nipple.

The incisions are then sutured to give a flatter better-contoured chest that is more pleasing to yourself. Any stitches will be of the dissolving type and so do not need to be removed.

How long does the surgery take?
The surgery will take up to 1-3 hours depending on the individual patient. Most patients can go home on the day of the surgery, however some will stay in the hospital for a couple of days.

What will happen in the recovery period?
There will be some swelling and bruising of the treated area and to help reduce this you will wear a firm Lycra garment which is worn for 3 weeks. The worst of your swelling will go down in the first few weeks however it may be a couple of months before the full effect of surgery is apparent.

Most patients can resume full activity including exercise in about a month following surgery. Most people are back to work within a week or two.
